The Zinc Polishing Lap has long been a trusted choice for professional gemstone cutters, known for its hardness, durability, and ability to produce flat, precise facets quickly—even on the hardest colored stones. Harder than Tin Polishing Lap, zinc laps deliver efficient polishing across a wide range of gem materials, from hard stones like corundum and cubic zirconia to softer varieties. This full-thickness zinc alloy lap is rigid enough to function as a single solid lap without bonding to a base plate or master lap, and it can be re-machined when needed.
Available in 6" and 8" diameters with 10mm, 12mm, and 15mm thicknesses, these laps offer versatility for different polishing requirements. Zinc polishing laps are easy to use and can even be scored with a knife or hacksaw blade if desired. When preparing a new lap, water should be applied along with 60–80# sandpaper, polishing from the outer edge toward the center until scratches are removed. Follow with 240# sandpaper for further smoothing. Polishing powder should be moistened with diamond oil to form a paste and applied evenly over 50–150# sandpaper , maintaining consistent humidity throughout the process. The lap is ready for use once the surface appears black and polished, providing professional-quality results on a wide range of gemstones.
